Tracy Chapman - The Girl with the Guitar
The warmup for Tracy Chapman was two Senegalese men on acoustic guitars singing in their native tongue I believe. Not as much a warmup as a curiousity. At exactly 21:00 Tracy's five piece band entered the stage while she followed shortly after. They opened with In the Dark. Tracy screwed up at the beginning though and had to start over. Following the opener was a song from her first album.
Songs I'm sure were part of the set:
- In the Dark
- Across the Lines
- The Promise
- Talking 'bout a Revolution
- Crossroads
- Behind the Wall
- Fast Car
- Hard Wired
- Give Me One Reason
- Telling Stories
- Get Up, Stand Up [Bob Marley]
Around the middle of the set she introduced the band members. When they came back for the encore Tracy talked a bit about the upcoming war: The other day we walked around in Copenhagen and we told everyone we were Canadians. [audience laughs due to the current USA vs the World tensions] ... Actually we are all Americans from California and we're all against the war. [ROUSING applause] ... Except for one who now wants to play the devil's advocate and argue. I can't remember the exact wording but it went something like that. Also I'm not sure if this was said in the middle of the set or when they came back for the encore. I should take notes next time. Before playing Get Up, Stand Up she (also) said something about they found it an appropriate song to play for these times. Needless to say everyone stood up from their seats during this last song.
Their were no major departures from the studio recorded songs as far as I could tell. A bit more jamming and improvisation could have been cool but the majority of the audience would not have understood. Her solo performance of Behind the Wall was stunningly great.
