Hosting Migration from EasySpeedy to Hetzner

For more than two years now I’ve had a dedicated server at EasySpeedy. They were my first encounter with the dedicated server business as a customer.

The only other company I’ve ever been in more direct phone contact with is TDC Kabel TV (now YouSee).

But they were cheap.

That’s why I chose EasySpeedy. They also had lots of bling on their homepage. 7253 operating systems were available to be installed on my shiny new server but I would only ever need one – Debian. Sure it’s a nice feature but it’s not that fucking important.

Uptime and stability is fucking important though. On the front page of EasySpeedy.com you can read:

“99.98% Proven Uptime.”

Lies! Lies! Lies!

During my first two months in 2005 with them they had already gone below 99.98%. Excuses were plentiful. Sometimes it seemed as if I had to make them aware of network problems with their carriers. Absurd. And before you think it was my line that had problems I’ve always tested on 2-3 lines on different ISPs.

Adding to downtime there were for months problems with extremely slow connectivity making it near impossible to work in a shell.

The last half year or so has improved though but both September and October saw issues that affected uptime.

So I’ve migrated to a new Hetzner server. I now have two servers there and manage four. The only issues I’ve had has been a few problems during the initial setup. Price obviously matters. Their DS5000 server is a much better offer than any of EasySpeedy’s.

Only time prevented me from moving away from EasySpeedy sooner.

Martin said 2 months later:

Jeg købte den første server i april 2007. Jeg administrerer nu 4 servere hos dem og har haft vældig få netværks problemer. I forhold til EasySpeedy er det i hvert fald ingenting.

Der har dog været et par problemer med setup af serverne. Install script der ikke lige fungerer, IP address på ens server er forkert (!) men råber man højt nok så bliver det hurtigt løst.

Til den pris så tror jeg ikke man kan få det meget bedre.

Hi. I was both interested in easyspeedy and hetzner (I’m just a bit worried about their firewall policy, which they ban you for 24 hours if your server is under attak). I never read good things about easyspeedy in the net (though I read quite nothing just because if you try to google “easyspeedy review” or something like that you get nothing). Hetzner I think is good, but I’m a bit worried here for the “firewall” policy too. Anywhere, can you say how are you with hetzner ? Are they serious ? No problems ? Not too much downtimes ? Sites slow ? How is their support team ?

Sorry to ask you so much, but I’d like to know a bit more from one of their customer, not one of their sales-rapresentative ;)

Thanks a lot Luckylinux

Luckylinux, stay away from EasySpeedy.

I can recommend Hetzner. They’re cheap, uptime has so far been great and very stable. Their support varies but problems do get solved quite quickly. The main problem with them is their lack in English skills so it’s sometimes difficult to explain a problem to them unless you’re fluent in German :-)

Remember that you get what you pay for.
